Wawonii Island (formerly called Wowoni) is an island in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, off the south east coast of Sulawesi. Its area is 715 km2. From 2013, it forms a regency of its own within Southease Sulawesi Province, having previously been a part of Konawe Regency. The new regency, which comprises theseven districs on Wawonii Island, is named Konawe Islands Regency (Kabupaten Konawe Kepulauan).

 

The seven sub-districts are divided into:

1. West Wawonii

2. Central Wawonii

3. South Wawonii

4. Southeast Wawonii

5. East Wawonii

6. Northeast Wawonii

7. North Wawonii

The capital of the new Regency is Langara (West Wawonii District). The distance from Kendari (the capital of Southeast Sulawesi Province) to Wawonii is about 3 hours by ferry or wooden ship.
